Deer Creek Equine has two full time veterinarians on staff to assist you with you horse’s care. We also have 3 staff members to assist in scheduling and answer any questions you have.
Katie Roberts is Dr. McGrain’s vet assistant. Katie grew up in Richmond, Va and began riding and handling horses as a small child under Pat Betts in Powhatan. She attended Hollins University in Roanoke and rode under the late Sandy Gerald as well as Nancy Peterson. She then returned home, and began teaching riding lessons and horsemanship at Zephyr’s Way Stables. She was also an assistant barn manager at The Pines.
Katie joined Deer Creek Equine at the start of 2019 as the Office Manager, and has now returned in February 2021 as the vet assistant for Dr. McGrain. She resides in Richmond with her cats Toby and Pine. In her spare time, she enjoys being outdoors, spending time with friends and bonding with her horse Uptown.
Sierra Poston is Dr. Arledge’s vet assistant. She was born and raised in Powhatan, Va and has ridden horses ever since she could stand on two feet. Her first job was at Level Green Riding School in 2009 where she gained experience and knowledge working with horses under Pat Betts. During high school, she was an active rider for Level Green’s AIRC team where she was Secretary and Co-Captain in her Junior and Senior year. After graduating from Powhatan High School, she attended Longwood University where she worked towards her degree in Communication Studies. While at Longwood, she rode for Winter Hill’s IHSA team. In her spare time she enjoys riding and showing her horse Dane, going on adventures with her Golden Retriever, Henry, and spending quality time with her family.
Celina Schmucker is the Deer Creek’s Office Manager. Celina was raised in Southside and Western Virginia where her love of horses began as a child. She and her husband, John, owned Aspen Hill Quarter Horses, a training and boarding facility of AQHA Show and trail horses located along High Bridge Trail State Park in Rice, VA. They coordinated with numerous professionals over the years to provide training, instruction, shows and clinics to their clients and the community. It was during this time that Aspen Hill became home to the Longwood University Equestrian Dressage team. John and Celina enjoyed sharing Aspen Hill and all they were blessed with.
Celina comes to us with years of business office, equine and veterinary clinic office experience. She has been devoted to horses, their care and the success of those that love them. She now owns a small farm in Dillwyn, VA and enjoys spending time with her family, two horses, Joey and Rylee, and her baby – and Australian Shepherd named “Austin.”
Mickey is our littlest herd member. He came to the clinic in May of 2015 through Powhatan Equine Rescue League as a 1 year old stud colt. The plan was for him to find an adoptive family after he was gelded. However, while he waited for the procedure, Dr Arledge fell in love with him and decided to adopt him herself. Mickey has since settled in and has become the clinic mascot. He made his first public appearance at the 2015 Powhatan Christmas parade. He always loves to meet new people and enjoys running around & kicking up his hooves.
